lyrics

Back when I was a just little scab picking child
I organized all my stuffed animals by biomes
Squids on the blue blankie with the buried treasure
Snakes on the tan quilt in the arid dessert
Pillows for the jungle cats, floors for the fishes
Each day I’d visit all the orphanages
Zoom around the room, treat the pelicans like aircrafts
Free the polar bears and the elephants from snare traps
Weary of the hunters spying in the darkness
Hiding in the sheets with the beasts from the arctic
Big heart, soft spot for the varmint
And a special place for the unicorns and martians

Begged little sis to shut the door
Pulled friends from thin air, dreams from the drawer
The world’s a bore; I needed something more
So I would think a new life, never thunk before like this
(And I was never ever the same)
(And I was never ever the same)
Begged my mother to shut the door
Pulled friends from thin air, dreams from the drawer
The world’s a bore; I needed something more
So I would think a new life, never thunk before like this
(And I was never ever the same)
(And I was never ever the same)

Back when I was just a pimple faced adolescent
I had a rock bucket and a meager stamp collection
A box full of tapes, tub full of cards
Pouch full of marbles and bugs in a jar
Assorted action figures of wrestlers and turtles
But my favorite thing was my worn black journal
I would take the days events and make them stretch
Revised the framework of how I faced the razor’s edge
Protagonist and underdog, flawed and dynamic
Defeat the evil lords then I’d pause for a sandwich
Even heroes gotta eat then it’s back to the task
Scribbling and jotting chicken scratch in the pad
Ignoring all the dust mites and chores
Between the blue lines I could unwind and morph
Made myself a knight on the front lines of war
A wizard of the wise bringing sunshine to storms
Tales turned to poems turned to punch lines and more
Til I’d spend a whole week like “what rhymes with orange”
